Our #ThrowbackThursday instrument this week is the Cavaquinho.

The cavaquinho is a traditional Portuguese instrument whose origins are not easily traced.  It is thought by some that the ancient Gallaeci were influenced by the Greeks, by others that it was brought to Braga by the Biscayans.

Whilst the ancient tuning was D-A-B-E most these days are tuned to D-G-B-D.  That said, given the precursors to the Ukulele are also thought to be Portuguese in origin – the braguinha and rajão, some will use baritone or tenor ukulele tunings.

Being not disimilar to a Ukulele we would recommend using our Schatten Design pickup as a more attractive alternative to the one used in the picture.
